The Red Cross Pre-Carnaval Dance – For Women Only! is one of the annual social events that all the Merida ladies look forward to. The clubs and community service groups of the city get together and put on a fund raising show for one another. The Red Cross supports the Cancer Clinic in town, so as well as being lots of fun – the dance is a great way to help the community
The groups of dancing women are of all shapes, sizes and dance ability. The International Women’s Club has participated many times, especially the year that one of our members Liza Johansson was chosen as the Queen. Our group has always integrated well with the local ladies. We were the hit of the fiesta the year we came dressed as aging beauty queens and did a dance routine to “Foxy Lady”
This year the dance will be held on Wednesday January 16th at the Club Campestre. The
doors will open at 1:00 pm – the band will be playing and the ladies will be shaking it up on the dance floor. About 3:00 pm the show should get underway.
The IWC has a special table at the Red Cross dance – all Ladies are invited to join us! You’ll have a chance to mingle with the Yucatecans and show’em that the international babes can boogey with the best of ‘em. If you’d like a seat at our table, leave me a comment and I’ll forward it to the dance organizer. These are pictures of a former dance extravaganza. Click on them to enlarge

I always find it amusing when the girls have a ‘for women ONLY’ event. When men do this – it is sexist – when women do it – it is what? Survival?
Actually this event was conceived as a “for women only” one because the husbands did not want their wives to go out and dance if there would be other men around. That was in the 1970s and while times have changed, tradition carries on. In Yucatan there are many for “men only” or “women only” clubs and events… no one looks at this as sexist. Women and men often enjoy different activities.
Might the fellows who consider the for women only events “sexist” perhaps be a tad jealous? If that is the case, then why so as clubs and activities for men only such as Knights of Columbus, Masons, and many others have been around for centuries. While the meetings and events of these organizations have always been shrouded in mystery the ladies are very up front in advertising what they intend to do at their socials.
ay ay Sharron – good point! but John was also right too tho as it is mainly women who get their ‘knickers in a knot’ about men excluding woman whilst maintaining women have the ‘right’ to NOT have men in some places. a bit of a double standard those women — and i a most certainly NOT one of them. Men can have clubs for men only – as long as us women can do the same.
It seems to me it should be: “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander”
so true Joany!
