016: Photographs and sketches

DSCF8763 - copiaI like to take photographs. A camera instantaneously records a scene and locks up the moment I want to save. I can look at it whenever I want and see “exactly” what was going on when I clicked the shutter button.

But I also like to sketch. I can’t draw an image all at once, and while I stand there scribbling away, it often moves and I have to bridge the change. There is a certain amount of “interpretation.”

Sort of like writing non-fiction and writing a novel.

Whenever I see something interesting that I don’t have a picture of, I use my camera. A camera like mine is easy to cart around. It’s a compact point and shoot. I’m told it will even take pictures under water, but I’ve never tried out that option.  I always keep it in my purse – just in case.

I also have a small net bag and in there I put the sketch pad, a pencil case, a couple of DSCF8777erasers and a sharpener – just in case.

Today I went to the Chocolate Museum with my friend, a fellow blogger from Connecticut. I had been to the museum before so while the chocolate preparation demo was in progress, I did a quick sketch.

I don’t take very good photos with my camera and I don’t draw very well, but I enjoy both – and that’s the whole point, isn’t it?

The sketch is great! I miss doing that. Pencil or charcoal?

I also enjoy the picture taking and keep a “point and shoot” in my pursewhen I trave that is, just in case, you never know. Everyone always enjoys when I share my photos via email.

You are very talented in so many ways. A great outlet…

    • Thanks so much. You know if you miss sketching there’s just one thing to do… pick up a scrap of paper and a pencil. I too had stopped for many years but at my son’s urging I took it up again. As I say, I am very much an amateur but I enjoy it immensely.

The nice thing about sketching is that even if your sketches aren’t good (and yours are good) at least you really look when you are sketching.
You have convinced me to go to the Chocolate museum!

Very nice indeed, Joanna. I LIKE your photos and drawing. Just a suggestion, for “someday”. Maybe your son can help you find software that will enable you to draw ON your photos. I myself haven’t mastered this yet, but am eager to try it,” someday.” Back in the camera film days, I used to do this with magic markers, and it was also lots of fun.

  4. You are so loyal Alinde! I love the idea of being able to color on my photographs. I’ll ask Carlos about that.

  5. I like your sketch! I know what you mean about taking pictures though. My husband is a photographer, a very accomplished one, so I am a little daunted by this when I take pictures. However, he just bought me an early birthday present, a new camera, and I hope this will improve my pictures. It is very tiny but has all the bells and whistles. We’ll see…

    • Thank you for liking my sketch… you are very kind. I take lots of photographs and once in a great while I get a really good one. I wonder what kind of camera you bought? I am looking at the new Lumix compact digitals and am interested in hearing from someone who has used one
