038: Babette’s Feast

babette 2Last evening, Jorge and I shared a wonderful meal with good friends, and one of the jokes going around the table concerned this blog… every time someone told a story they’d say,

“Now Joanna this isn’t for your blog.”

I assured them that what we spoke about around the table, would stay at the table.

Nonetheless, I divulge no confidences by saying that we had an excellent time and in fact, certain aspects of it reminded me of one of my absolutely favorite films of all time: Babette’s Feast.

Babette’s Feast is a Danish film, produced in 1987. It is based on a novel by Isak Dinesen babette 4(Karen Blixen) who also wrote Out of Africa.

By the name, you will gather that a sumptuous meal is involved, and you would be right. But the theme is friendship, loyalty, self effacement and honor. You can watch a short clip on YouTube:

and read good summary of the story on Wikipedia:

If you haven’t seen this film, you can download it on various internet sites or rent it at most DVD rental places. Bon apetit.

One of my favorites too! I think I have a CD of the music from the movie…have to check. Sounds like you must have had a very special evening and feast!

  2. Alinde says:

Thanks for the reminder, Joanna. Will re-watch that favorite soon. “Earthly pleasures” sure have their place, don’t they?

  3. John says:

I love Isak Denison and Babette’s Feast is great, but I have to say Out of Africa is my all time favorite movie. The scenery, the music, the handsome Robert Redford and Meryl Streep’s incredible narration and performance.

    • Out of Africa is a wonderful film too, isn’t it? Although the topics and settings of Isak Denison’s two stories are completely different, the portrayal of the human spirit is magnificent in both.

A vote for Babette. Saw it years ago, and I know these people, who are scared of showing emotions. The story that Karen Blixen wrote was orginally set in a small fjord village in Northern Norway, but the Danish creater of the movie decided to place it in Denmark. It is an incredible movie. I need to see it again, as well.

  5. Not to be nit-picky but Babette´s feast is a Danish flick, not Swedish =)

I saw Babette’s Feast many years ago and it is still one of my favourites.
