Starting soon… I will be leading a 10 week memoir writing workshop at Villa Serena, a wellness center located in Garcia Ginerés. The course is open to first-time and experienced writers.
We will meet on five consecutive Thursday afternoons before Christmas, and five more in the New Year. The first session will be on Thursday October 24th from 5 – 7 pm. The cost is just 50 pesos a session.
In class, we will discuss the techniques used in memoir writing and by the end of the program, each participant will have an outline they can pursue. We’ll also explore ways of composing text using both English and Spanish. Of course, native English speakers will predominantly use their language and Spanish-speakers will use theirs’. But as we live in an international community, both English and Spanish have a place in our writing.
Many people think of memoir writing as autobiography. But memoir is much more flexible. Your memoir can be about a single event, a particular period of time, a relationship, a particular person or a theme… it can really be about anything.

I think we’re going to have a lot of fun…
There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in.
I gather together the dreams, fantasies, experiences that preoccupied me as a girl, that stay with me and appear and reappear in different shapes and forms in all my work. Without telling everything that happened, they document all that remains most vivid.
Sick of being a prisoner of my childhood, I want to put it behind me.
The tales you are about to read are the truth, practically the truth, and nothing less than a half-truth…
A lot of presidential memoirs, they say, are dull and self-serving. I hope mine is interesting and self-serving.
I believe that the memoir is the novel of the 21st century; it’s an amazing form that we haven’t even begun to tap…we’re just getting started figuring out what the rules are.
